My story: I started at 19

I didn't touch a piano until I was 19.

Before that, I was a boy with no plan B. The plan was simple: decent O-level results, a poly course, whatever job came after. Then the results came out. Top in history for the whole school, and a D7 in both maths and science. Just like that, poly was gone.

I still remember the walk home that day. I felt hopeless, like the future had closed its doors on me before I'd even started. My dad, trying his best to comfort me, said that one day I could be his taxi co-driver. I laughed, but inside I was lost.

The years that followed didn't get much better. A fashion design course at NAFA that I couldn't finish. One part-time job after another. People around me who quietly decided I was going nowhere, and some days I believed them.

Then one ordinary shift at a supermarket changed everything. There was a DVD shop nearby, and on its little TV screen, Jay Chou was sitting at a piano, playing and singing 擱淺 live. I stood there and couldn't look away. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. In that moment I knew, with a certainty I had never felt about anything, that I was going to learn the piano. No matter how hard it was. No matter how long it took.

That night I searched for a piano teacher, contacted the very first one I found, and sat for my first lesson the next day. I can still feel it: my fingers on the keys for the first time. I played badly. It didn't matter. It was magic.

I had no instrument and no money for lessons, so I worked longer hours at jobs I hated and saved every dollar I could for a keyboard. Then I practised. Two, three, four hours a day, every day, because for the first time in my life I had something I truly wanted.

And slowly, the boy with no direction became a pianist, and then a piano teacher.

The piano gave me everything I thought I'd lost: a career, a direction, my confidence, my happiness. When I'm down, when there are feelings I can't explain to anyone, the piano is still there. Honestly, I think it saved my life.

That's why I do what I do. Many of my students come to me thinking it's too late, or that they're just not the musical type. I was that person too. And I'd love to pass this gift on to you.

How I teach

Rather than spending weeks or months on one song, I build the core skills behind every pop song: left-hand patterns, harmonies and fill-ins. You learn them through songs you love, on a lesson plan made for you.

Every lesson covers one pop song as a piano solo and one as an accompaniment. I also cover music theory, so you understand what you're playing and can use it on any song. All my students are adults, and many started as complete beginners.

I wrote my own curriculum, Improvisation Pop Piano: a two-year course in four levels, from your first left-hand pattern to full harmony, fill-ins and playing by ear. It's the same path every student follows, adjusted to your pace and the songs you want to play.
